Banana Fiber Fabric Development
Bangladesh is one of the world’s leading textile producers, yet it heavily relies on imported raw materials, particularly cotton. At the same time, large quantities of banana plants are cultivated across rural Bangladesh, especially in areas like Narsingdi, where banana farming is a common agricultural activity. After harvesting the fruits, banana pseudostems are typically discarded as agricultural waste.
Banana fiber is a biodegradable, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic and cotton fibers. It has high tensile strength, is moisture-resistant, and offers a promising base for sustainable textile production.
With the rising global demand for eco-friendly fabrics, there is an opportunity to create a new industry around banana fiber extraction and fabric production in rural Bangladesh, particularly in Narsingdi, where both agricultural and textile skills are available.
