Golden Fibre Reimagined: Sustainable Pineapple Fibre Development in Modhupur, Tangail
Bangladesh, long known for jute as its golden fibre, now has an emerging opportunity to diversify its sustainable textile base by exploring pineapple leaf fibre (PLF) — a biodegradable, high-tensile material derived from agricultural waste.
Modhupur in Tangail is a prominent pineapple-producing region in Bangladesh. However, while large quantities of pineapple leaves are discarded after harvest, they contain valuable fibre that can be extracted, processed, and used in high-demand industries such as fashion, home textiles, paper, and bio-composites.
Globally, pineapple fibre (piña) is gaining attention as a vegan, sustainable alternative to leather and synthetic fabrics, particularly in eco-conscious fashion markets in Europe and Asia. This project aims to tap into that opportunity by developing a community-based PLF value chain in Modhupur.
